    How Do HA Fillers work?

Fillers are extremely effective when used in conjunction with botox, but the two products work very differently in how they reduce the detrimental effects of time. Where botox is injected to reduce the effects of the muscles that cause wrinkles. Fillers, on the other hand, work to replace the fullness of the skin.

Botox can be thought of as new regulations that limit the use of the heavy machinery that caused the damage, and fillers can be likened to the new gravel and asphalt that is laid down into those ruts to smooth the roadway. One product prevents the continuance of the damaging actions, while the other repairs the harm that has already been done.

The filler products used at Azure Aesthetic are safe and natural cosmetic dermal fillers that restore volume and fullness to the skin, resulting in the correction, reductions, and often elimination of facial wrinkles and folds. Those same industry standard products are also used for lip enhancement.

Fillers are made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid; a natural substance that already exists in the human body. The hyaluronic acid comes in the form of a crystal-clear gel called Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. They are injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts through an ultra-fine needle. The anesthetic solution can be applied as a skin cream or by injection in some cases. The procedure is simple and offers visible results right away.

We pride ourselves in creating an artistic accentuation of the individual's strengths, while minimizing any flaws. This may range from a subtle filling of the lips to a more dramatic creation of natural cheek lines.

At AZURE aesthetic we exclusively use Teosyal dermal fillers.

    Fillers image

Teosyal fillers are manufactured in Geneva, Switzerland, where they follow the most strict quality standards and testing. Teosyal fillers are the purest and most advanced dermal fillers available in Canada as well as Health Canada approved. These fillers are unique due to their new crosslinking technology, which uses a preserved network method that involves longer Hyaluronic Acid (HA) chains with low energy hydrogen bonds. Because of this, the HA chains can form and just as easily detach, depending on the pressure applied to the gel. Therefore, the gel is more labile and mobile. Other dermal filler brands tend to be too rigid and as a result appear unnatural in the skin because they do not move naturally with facial expression.

Teosyal RHA is the first filler range with exclusive rheological properties that provide high stretch, without compromising strength. Unlike other fillers, Teosyal RHA's unique Hyaluronic acid chains have high molecular weight as well as long chains of HA, which mimic the natural HA in our bodies. Older fillers are designed with small HA chains and low molecular weight, which are not as well recognized in human bodies, and therefore have a higher risk of causing complications. Teosyal RHA fillers were designed for dynamic facial movement and thanks to this advanced technology, Teosyal fillers can achieve effective and natural results, without compromising longevity and efficacy of results.

  • Post-Treatment Instructions
    After Treatment

Today you have had injections with hyaluronic acid dermal filler to restore volume to your skin. The product has been placed carefully in the appropriate position to promote a personal visage of youth and good health. A local anesthetic containing lidocaine may have been used on the surface of the skin or by injection.

After treatment, you may experience swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the site of treatment. This will typically last for less than a week. The use of Tylenol (acetaminophen) is permitted. If the lips were injected, the swelling may be more significant. Arnica gel can be helpful to minimize redness and swelling.

In rare circumstances, a blood vessel may have inadvertently been injected which may cause skin breakdown. Be aware that you must guard against infection by keeping the skin clean, especially in the first 48 hours. You may apply only a small amount of makeup after 6 hours but do so gently. Avoid excessive rubbing or manipulation of the skin. Aspirin, alcohol, and heavy exercise are permitted after 24 hours.

The gel is quite movable for the first few days — do not press on the treated area. Try to sleep on your back.

For at least 2 weeks after treatment, avoid prolonged exposure to either hot (eg. hot tubs) or cold (eg. skiing) temperatures and prolonged direct sun exposure.

Please report any redness and/or visible swelling that persists for more than 1 week or any other symptoms that cause concern, to our office. It is normal to feel the sensation of newly placed filler. This feeling may last a few days to several weeks. We would like to see you 2 weeks after treatment in order to repeat your personal photos and assess the outcome of the injections. Additional injections may be undertaken at an additional fee.

Over the course of the next few weeks, the filler will settle into position and absorb water, improving the initial effect. Fillers usually last for 6-18 months depending on the area treated and the total number of syringes used.

  • FAQ
    Frequently asked questions

    What is Hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a gel that is injected into the skin to add volume, restore volume and fill in wrinkles or folds. The syringe contains hyaluronic acid almost identical to that naturally found in the body. It is completely biologically degradable.

    How does it work?
A small amount is injected directly into the skin to add volume. HA is naturally integrated into the tissue and allows for the free passage of important nutritive elements like oxygen and hormones. The product will also bind water, which adds to the filling effect.

    What are fillers used for?
Wrinkles can be raised to the level of the surrounding skin. The most common areas are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), the nasolabial folds (from the wing of the nose to the angle of the mouth) and the lips, but other sites may also be treated. Cheeks which have become flattened by the aging process can be lifted beautifully using filler. Very deep wrinkles and some types of acne scars cannot typically be treated with this material. Very superficial wrinkles are often difficult to correct.

    Do the injections hurt?
Pain is very individualized and dependent on one’s tolerance to pain. Prior to treatment, a topical anesthetic cream can be applied, which takes about 30 minutes to take effect. Or in some instances, pain can be improved through the use of a nerve block similar to what you may have experienced at the dentist’s office.

What is involved in a dermal filler treatment session?
The treatment can be carried out immediately and takes about 30 minutes. The filler is injected with a very thin needle into the skin. The results can be seen immediately. Clients may/may not experience slight swelling or bruising in the treated area.

    Can fillers replace surgical procedures?
No. People with excess facial skin or people who want a major resurfacing of the skin cannot be corrected with fillers alone.

    Can the material be removed?
No, but since hyaluronic acid is a natural material, it dissolves with time. If you feel uncertain about the desired result, it is possible to have the treatment done in steps on different occasions.

    Is it safe?
The hyaluronic acid is almost identical to that already present in the body. Since it is not made from animals there is no risk of transmitting diseases from animals or eliciting allergic reactions to common foodstuffs such as eggs, meat or chicken. Immediately after the treatment, the treatment site can be slightly swollen and/or red. This is a normal result of the injection and goes away in a day or two after treatment, and within a week after lip injections.

Are there any types of reactions that may occur?
Yes. If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another cold sore eruption. If you are using any anti-inflammatory medication (i.e. Advil), you should be aware that it may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Other types of reactions are very uncommon, but about 1 in 2000 persons have experienced transient swelling, redness and tenderness at or near the treatment site(s) up to several weeks after treatment.

How long does the effect last?
The filler dissolves naturally with time, and without touch-ups will eventually totally disappear from the body. How long a hyaluronic acid filler treatment lasts is very individual, depending on many factors such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age and metabolism. However, for the majority, about 50- 80% of the effect remains after six months. You can replenish the filler whenever you feel the need, as touch-ups can be performed any time after the initial treatment. The injected material will gradually disappear until your skin looks just as it did before the treatment.
